Winding Rivers District welcomes its newest unit, Cub Scout Pack 3 (Canton, PA)!
Working with Karl Ziegenfus, Council Camping and Program Director, and Michael Landon of Troop 33 (Canton, PA), District Executive Paula Umber started the unit startup process in late 2024.
At the beginning of this year, 10 youth were registered, adult leaders were trained and approved, and VWF Post 714 was approved as the chartered organization. Danielle Gansel is the Cubmaster, joining her two sons in the group.
Talking about her role, Danielle says, “this new journey has been so much fun and rewarding. I’ve learned to turn just about anything into a teaching moment to tie to scouts. I love seeing how excited each Cub gets when they learn something new, or tackle a difficult task.”

Since launch, the Pack has visited the Canton, PA Fire Hall, put together Valentine’s Day Buddy Bags to exchange, and has held its first fundraiser. They are getting ready for Pinewood Derby and looking forward to recruiting more Cub Scouts for the fall.
Paula says, “This was my first unit startup, and it was very interesting to watch the process. I have spent a lot of time with this pack. Our Cubmaster has been fantastic and is full of energy, and the other parents have been great and are working together really well!”
Winding Rivers District is looking for unit commissioners. If you have Scouting experience and would like to pass it along to newer units, please contact Paula at paula.umber@scouting.org.
